Label teardown

What the pack promises versus what the label chemistry actually is.

The marketing claim

“Removes grease and grime from hobs, sinks and baths”

The chemical reality

Cif is citric acid plus a mild limestone abrasive in a cream base — the same soft scrub as mixing food-grade citric with chalk. The Pink Stuff is quartz abrasive instead; Cif is acid-forward for limescale film.

The Marketing Claim & The Catch

A 500 millilitres pack of Cif Cream Cleaner typically retails around £1.50 in household cleaning. That is a UK shelf-price snapshot for the maths on this page — not a live shop quote or a manufacturer RRP. Listings, sizes and deals move. The marketing line is that you are buying a finished lifestyle product, not a weighed chemical.

On the pack: Removes grease and grime from hobs, sinks and baths; Non-scratch cream formula; and Fresh lemon fragrance.

The catch: Cif is citric acid plus a mild limestone abrasive in a cream base — the same soft scrub as mixing food-grade citric with chalk. The Pink Stuff is quartz abrasive instead; Cif is acid-forward for limescale film.

Proprietary Blend & Dosage Breakdown

The labelled active is Citric acid (with calcium carbonate abrasive) at 5%. Everything else in the pack is limestone powder and surfactants.

At 5% active, most of what you pay for is carrier and packaging. The brand is selling convenience, fragrance and a label — not a uniquely potent molecule.

Branded working strength is whatever comes out of the bottle. The bulk alternative is 100% Citric acid monohydrate + calcium carbonate, mixed to 25 g citric + 75 g chalk + water to 500 ml paste.

The Active Chemical Alternative (Dupe Stack)

The dupe stack is Citric acid monohydrate + calcium carbonate at 100% bulk. Indexed as CAS 5949-29-1, formula C6H8O7·H2O + CaCO3. Buy it as 1 kg citric + 1 kg chalk for around £9.00 from Amazon UK.

  1. Gloves recommended — citric is an acid. Never mix with bleach.
  2. Blend 25 g citric acid monohydrate, 75 g calcium carbonate (chalk/whiting) and enough water to make a thick cream (~500 ml).
  3. Apply with a damp cloth to hobs, sinks and baths. Rinse well.
  4. 1 kg of each powder makes about 20 half-litre tubs of cream.
  5. Store paste sealed; citric creams keep a week in a jar — make small batches.

Active ingredient and cheaper alternative — FAQ

Is Cif the same as Cillit Bang limescale spray?

Related but different format. Cillit Bang is a liquid acid spray (~10% citric/sulfamic). Cif is a 5% citric cream with abrasive for scrubbing hobs. Both stack to bulk citric — see the Cillit Bang teardown for liquid descale maths.

Will Cif-style cream scratch stainless?

Limestone abrasive is softer than steel — fine for hobs when used with a soft cloth. Do not use on high-gloss lacquer or non-stick coatings you care about — test a corner first.

How do you mix the Cream Cleaner dupe stack?

Gloves recommended — citric is an acid. Never mix with bleach. Blend 25 g citric acid monohydrate, 75 g calcium carbonate (chalk/whiting) and enough water to make a thick cream (~500 ml). Apply with a damp cloth to hobs, sinks and baths. Rinse well. 1 kg of each powder makes about 20 half-litre tubs of cream. Store paste sealed; citric creams keep a week in a jar — make small batches.
