The marketing claim
“Laundry booster and stain soak after borax was withdrawn”
The chemical reality
Borax substitute is sodium sesquicarbonate (CAS 533-96-0) — not borax, not soda crystals, not bicarbonate. Dri-Pak’s 500 g box is a grocery pour of the same salt sold in 5 kg sacks. The EU reclassified borates; this is the carbonate/bicarbonate double salt that replaced the cupboard staple.

The Marketing Claim & The Catch
A 500 grams pack of Dri-Pak Borax Substitute typically retails around £2.99 in household cleaning. That is a UK shelf-price snapshot for the maths on this page — not a live shop quote or a manufacturer RRP. Listings, sizes and deals move. The marketing line is that you are buying a finished lifestyle product, not a weighed chemical.
On the pack: Laundry booster and stain soak after borax was withdrawn; Gentler than soda crystals, stronger than bicarbonate; and Clean and Natural mineral compound.

Proprietary Blend & Dosage Breakdown
The labelled active is Sodium sesquicarbonate at 100%. Everything else in the pack is none (mineral powder).
Even when the pack is sold as “pure” or ready-to-use, the dose that actually does the work is Sodium sesquicarbonate. The rest is how they get it into a bottle you will pick up.
Branded working strength is whatever comes out of the bottle. The bulk alternative is 100% Sodium sesquicarbonate (borax substitute), mixed to 20 g per litre for laundry soak / general cleaning.

The Active Chemical Alternative (Dupe Stack)
The dupe stack is Sodium sesquicarbonate (borax substitute) at 100% bulk. Indexed as CAS 533-96-0, formula Na2CO3·NaHCO3·2H2O. Buy it as 5 kg for around £10.99 from Amazon UK.
Working strength: 20 g per litre for laundry soak / general cleaning. Indicative cost £0.04 per diluted litre — 60% below a typical branded pack on a per-litre basis, before you reuse leftover bulk.
Follow the mixing method and the supplier SDS. Wear the listed PPE. Do not mix incompatible oxidisers, acids or ammonia.
- Gloves recommended — alkaline dust can irritate skin and eyes. Do not mix with acids or bleach in one bucket.
- Dissolve 20 g per litre of warm water for a pre-wash soak or floor wash. For a stubborn stain, make a thick paste with a little water and dwell before the wash.
- A 5 kg sack is ten 500 g grocery boxes. Store dry; sesquicarbonate cakes if it picks up moisture.
- This is milder than soda crystals at the same grams-per-litre — do not expect caustic oven-cleaner strength.
- Rinse food-contact surfaces. Keep the sack labelled and away from children.

Active ingredient and cheaper alternative — FAQ
Is borax substitute the same as Dri-Pak soda crystals?
No. Soda crystals are sodium carbonate decahydrate (CAS 6132-02-1). Borax substitute is sodium sesquicarbonate (CAS 533-96-0) — a milder alkali sitting between bicarbonate and washing soda. See the soda-crystals teardown for the stronger laundry alkali.
Is this real borax?
No. True borax is sodium tetraborate (CAS 1303-96-4), withdrawn from EU/UK cleaning shelves. Sesquicarbonate is a different molecule with a similar pH band. Do not hunt technical borax for laundry.
How do you mix the Borax Substitute dupe stack?
Gloves recommended — alkaline dust can irritate skin and eyes. Do not mix with acids or bleach in one bucket. Dissolve 20 g per litre of warm water for a pre-wash soak or floor wash. For a stubborn stain, make a thick paste with a little water and dwell before the wash. A 5 kg sack is ten 500 g grocery boxes. Store dry; sesquicarbonate cakes if it picks up moisture. This is milder than soda crystals at the same grams-per-litre — do not expect caustic oven-cleaner strength. Rinse food-contact surfaces. Keep the sack labelled and away from children.
