The marketing claim
“Removes limescale, bacteria and detergent residue”
The chemical reality
Ecozone's SDS lists tetrasodium EDTA (CAS 64-02-8) as the primary chelating agent alongside citric acid. EDTA sequesters calcium and magnesium ions that form limescale, stripping them from the heating element without the heat that citric descaling requires. Bulk tetrasodium EDTA dihydrate is food-additive grade and costs a fraction of a foil pouch.

The Marketing Claim & The Catch
A 250 grams pack of Ecozone Washing Machine Cleaner & Descaler typically retails around £5.99 in household cleaning. That is a UK shelf-price snapshot for the maths on this page — not a live shop quote or a manufacturer RRP. Listings, sizes and deals move. The marketing line is that you are buying a finished lifestyle product, not a weighed chemical.

Proprietary Blend & Dosage Breakdown
The labelled active is Tetrasodium EDTA (chelating descaler) at 30%. Everything else in the pack is citric acid, sodium carbonate and fragrance.
At 30% active, most of what you pay for is carrier and packaging. The brand is selling convenience, fragrance and a label — not a uniquely potent molecule.
Branded working strength is whatever comes out of the bottle. The bulk alternative is 99% Tetrasodium EDTA dihydrate (food/technical grade), mixed to 50 g per maintenance wash drum dose.

The Active Chemical Alternative (Dupe Stack)
The dupe stack is Tetrasodium EDTA dihydrate (food/technical grade) at 99% bulk. Indexed as CAS 64-02-8, formula C10H12N2Na4O8·2H2O. Buy it as 500 g for around £8.99 from Amazon UK.
Working strength: 50 g per maintenance wash drum dose. Indicative cost £0.90 per diluted litre — 66% below a typical branded pack on a per-litre basis, before you reuse leftover bulk.
Follow the mixing method and the supplier SDS. Wear the listed PPE. Do not mix incompatible oxidisers, acids or ammonia.
- Wear gloves — EDTA is a mild irritant in powder form. Avoid inhaling dust.
- For a washing machine maintenance dose: add 50 g to the empty drum (not the drawer) and run a 60 °C cotton cycle. Flush with a short rinse cycle after.
- For a dishwasher clean: add 30 g to the empty base (not the cutlery basket) and run a hot cycle.
- Do not combine with chlorine bleach in the drum — EDTA chelates the hypochlorite catalyst. If you want a separate bleach drum clean, run it in a different cycle.
- 500 g at 50 g per wash is 10 drum doses — roughly 10 Ecozone pouches. Store dry in the sealed bag.

Active ingredient and cheaper alternative — FAQ
Is EDTA the same as citric acid for descaling?
Not the same job. Citric acid (CAS 5949-29-1) dissolves calcium carbonate by lowering pH. Tetrasodium EDTA (CAS 64-02-8) sequesters calcium and magnesium ions by chelation — it does not require acid pH and works at lower temperatures. The two are often used together: EDTA chelates; citric dissolves the loosened mineral crust.
Is EDTA environmentally friendly?
EDTA biodegrades slowly in the environment and can mobilise heavy metals in soils. Use within dosing guidance — this is a machine maintenance tool, not a cleaning spray for ponds or gardens. Check your local water authority's guidance if you discharge to a septic tank.
How do you mix the Washing Machine Cleaner & Descaler dupe stack?
Wear gloves — EDTA is a mild irritant in powder form. Avoid inhaling dust. For a washing machine maintenance dose: add 50 g to the empty drum (not the drawer) and run a 60 °C cotton cycle. Flush with a short rinse cycle after. For a dishwasher clean: add 30 g to the empty base (not the cutlery basket) and run a hot cycle. Do not combine with chlorine bleach in the drum — EDTA chelates the hypochlorite catalyst. If you want a separate bleach drum clean, run it in a different cycle. 500 g at 50 g per wash is 10 drum doses — roughly 10 Ecozone pouches. Store dry in the sealed bag.
