“Heavy-duty oven cleaner & degreaser”

The chemical reality

Another caustic gel with marketing. The attack on polymerised fats is sodium hydroxide. Dissolve caustic soda pearls to about 4% w/v and you get the same chemistry without the trigger-bottle tax.

The Marketing Claim & The Catch

A 300 millilitres pack of Mr Muscle Oven Cleaner typically retails around £3.50 in household cleaning. That is a UK shelf-price snapshot for the maths on this page — not a live shop quote or a manufacturer RRP. Listings, sizes and deals move. The marketing line is that you are buying a finished lifestyle product, not a weighed chemical.

On the pack: Heavy-duty oven cleaner & degreaser; No-scrub formula for burnt grease; and Fast-acting clean in about 30 minutes.

Proprietary Blend & Dosage Breakdown

The labelled active is Sodium hydroxide (caustic soda) at 4%. Everything else in the pack is water, thickener, surfactant and propellant / trigger base.

At 4% active, most of what you pay for is carrier and packaging. The brand is selling convenience, fragrance and a label — not a uniquely potent molecule.

Branded working strength is whatever comes out of the bottle. The bulk alternative is 99% Sodium hydroxide pearls 99% (caustic soda), mixed to 40 g/L (about 4% w/v working liquor).

  1. Causes severe burns. Splash goggles, household gloves, ventilation. Always add pearls to cold water — never water onto dry pearls.
  2. Dissolve 40 g of pearls in 1 litre of cold water in a plastic jug (~4% NaOH). Optionally thicken slightly with a pinch of wallpaper paste for vertical oven walls.
  3. Apply to a cold oven with a nylon brush. Dwell 20–40 minutes. Wipe and rinse copiously. Keep off aluminium, zinc, self-clean coatings you do not want etched, and skin.
  4. Never mix with acids or bleach. 1 kg makes about 25 litres of working liquor — dozens of 300 ml trigger bottles.

Active ingredient and cheaper alternative — FAQ

Is this the same as Oven Pride?

Same primary molecule — sodium hydroxide — different packaging theatre. Oven Pride sells a bag kit; Mr Muscle sells a spray/gel. Bulk pearls cover both if you mix to roughly 4% and rinse thoroughly.

Can I spray caustic onto a hot oven?

No. Work on a cold oven only. Hot caustic spatters, fumes harder and can damage seals. Apply, dwell, wipe, rinse with plenty of water.

How do you mix the Oven Cleaner dupe stack?

Causes severe burns. Splash goggles, household gloves, ventilation. Always add pearls to cold water — never water onto dry pearls. Dissolve 40 g of pearls in 1 litre of cold water in a plastic jug (~4% NaOH). Optionally thicken slightly with a pinch of wallpaper paste for vertical oven walls. Apply to a cold oven with a nylon brush. Dwell 20–40 minutes. Wipe and rinse copiously. Keep off aluminium, zinc, self-clean coatings you do not want etched, and skin. Never mix with acids or bleach. 1 kg makes about 25 litres of working liquor — dozens of 300 ml trigger bottles.
