Start with the salt, not the brand
Magnesium supplements hide behind ‘3-in-1’, ‘clinical sleep blend’ and influencer hot chocolate. The SDS or supplement facts panel names one magnesium compound. That salt drives absorption, gut tolerance and price — not the flavour.
Citrate is inexpensive and osmotic (can move the bowels). Bisglycinate is a chelated form often marketed for evening use. Chloride is what ‘magnesium oil’ sprays use. They are not interchangeable on dose or job.
Beam Dream: citrate in a cocoa cup
Beam’s sleep powder is a ritual product: cocoa, stevia, coconut milk powder, plus magnesium citrate, L-theanine and small botanical doses. The teardown maths shows most of the pack price is packaging and flavour, not exotic actives.
If you like the drink, fair enough. If you want the chemistry without £2+ per cup, bisglycinate plus theanine in plain milk or tea is the same stack minus the marketing.
Nutrition Geeks: glycinate in a capsule
The Magnesium Glycinate 3-in-1 tub is bisglycinate in capsules with B6 and D3 on the label — closer to the gentle salt in Beam’s dupe stack than Beam’s own citrate-forward powder.
Compare elemental magnesium per day, not capsule count. A 60-capsule IG tub is often weeks of supply; 500 g bisglycinate powder is months. Capsules win on convenience; bulk wins on cost per milligram.
Building your own stack
Typical food-supplement pattern: 200–300 mg elemental magnesium as bisglycinate with an evening meal. Optional: 200 mg L-theanine if you want the Beam-style wind-down — buy it as a separate powder.
Reduce dose if stools loosen. This is not a treatment for insomnia or anxiety. Speak to a GP or pharmacist if you take heart medicines, diuretics or have kidney issues.
FAQ
- Is glycinate the same as citrate?
- No. Beam’s label often leads with magnesium citrate — cheap, can loosen stools. Bisglycinate (glycinate) is the chelated salt many people tolerate better at night. Nutrition Geeks capsules are bisglycinate; Beam is citrate plus cocoa and botanicals.
- Should I buy Beam, Nutrition Geeks or bulk powder?
- Same decision tree: read the label for elemental magnesium milligrams and the salt name. Capsules (NG) vs hot chocolate ritual (Beam) vs unflavoured bisglycinate plus optional L-theanine (bulk). None of these are sleep medicines.
- What about BetterYou magnesium oil?
- Different molecule entirely — magnesium chloride for transdermal use, not oral glycinate. See the magnesium oil teardown if you are comparing sprays to capsules.

‘Magnesium oil’ is a saturated solution of magnesium chloride, not a lipid. Flakes from the same Dead Sea / Zechstein geology dissolve in water for pennies. Not a medicine; evidence for transdermal magnesium is mixed.
