The marketing claim
“Plant-based active for flowers, fruit and vegetables”
The chemical reality
BugClear Fruit & Veg Ultra is rapeseed oil at 17 g/L (CAS 8002-13-9) — a contact oil suffocant, not acetamiprid (BugClear Ultra concentrate) and not deltamethrin. Nineteen millilitres of refined rapeseed oil made up to a litre with a drop of washing-up liquid matches the trigger. It is not a neurotoxin and it will scorch oil-shy plants.

The Marketing Claim & The Catch
A 800 millilitres pack of BugClear Fruit & Veg Ultra Ready to Use typically retails around £6.50 in lawn & garden. That is a UK shelf-price snapshot for the maths on this page — not a live shop quote or a manufacturer RRP. Listings, sizes and deals move. The marketing line is that you are buying a finished lifestyle product, not a weighed chemical.
On the pack: Plant-based active for flowers, fruit and vegetables; Kills aphids, spider mites and whitefly — effects in a day; and Ready to use — 17 g/L rapeseed oil.

Proprietary Blend & Dosage Breakdown
The labelled active is Rapeseed oil at 1.7%. Everything else in the pack is water (ready-to-use oil emulsion).
At 1.7% active, most of what you pay for is carrier and packaging. The brand is selling convenience, fragrance and a label — not a uniquely potent molecule.
Branded working strength is whatever comes out of the bottle. The bulk alternative is 100% Refined rapeseed oil emulsified to 17 g/L, mixed to 19 ml oil made up to 1 L (≈17 g/L — Fruit & Veg Ultra band).

The Active Chemical Alternative (Dupe Stack)
The dupe stack is Refined rapeseed oil emulsified to 17 g/L at 100% bulk. Indexed as CAS 8002-13-9. Buy it as 5 litres for around £9.99 from Amazon UK.
Working strength: 19 ml oil made up to 1 L (≈17 g/L — Fruit & Veg Ultra band). Indicative cost £0.04 per diluted litre — 90% below a typical branded pack on a per-litre basis, before you reuse leftover bulk.
Follow the mixing method and the supplier SDS. Wear the listed PPE. Do not mix incompatible oxidisers, acids or ammonia.
- Physical insecticide: oil blocks spiracles. Gloves. Spray at dusk; keep off ponds. Test a leaf on ferns, poinsettias, cyclamen, African violets and ivy — oils can scorch those.
- Measure 19 ml of refined rapeseed oil into a litre jug, add a drop of washing-up liquid as emulsifier, and top up with water. Shake as you spray — the emulsion separates.
- Coat both leaf faces until glistening. Do not spray open blooms or plants in hot sun. Use immediately; do not store mixed spray.
- 5 litres of oil at 19 ml/L makes about 260 litres of RTU-strength spray — more than three hundred 800 ml triggers.
- Some plants are oil-sensitive. This is not acetamiprid, not deltamethrin and not SB soft soap. Triple-rinse the sprayer.

Active ingredient and cheaper alternative — FAQ
Is this the same as BugClear Ultra concentrate?
No. Ultra concentrate is acetamiprid (CAS 135410-20-7), a neonicotinoid systemic. Fruit & Veg Ultra RTU is rapeseed oil (CAS 8002-13-9) at 17 g/L. Different HSE numbers, different bee and harvest rules. Do not tank-mix them.
Is cooking rapeseed oil a licensed insecticide?
Same triglyceride (CAS 8002-13-9). The garden-centre bottle is an amateur-labelled plant-protection product at 17 g/L. Cooking oil is a foodstuff. Buy a householder-labelled oil spray if you need the authorised use; the dilution maths still shows what you are paying for.
