Three jobs, three molecules
Garden-centre shelves blur ‘kills weeds’, ‘kills brambles’ and ‘organic slug killer’. The SDS names the active — that is what you are buying.
Hard surfaces and bare ground → glyphosate RTU or concentrate (Pathclear ~0.46%, classic Resolva 24H ~1% — not the Xpress cap). Fast contact burn-down without glyphosate → pelargonic acid (Resolva Xpress / Xtra Fast). Daisies and dandelions in grass → mecoprop-P plus dicamba (Doff / Weedol LN) or MCPA/fluroxypyr/clopyralid (current Weedol Lawn). Woody weeds and some brush → triclopyr concentrate. Slugs → ferric phosphate bait. Blackspot on roses → myclobutanil, tebuconazole or triticonazole — not a weedkiller at all. Greenfly on roses → deltamethrin, acetamiprid, or cypermethrin (Doff Rose Shield RTU at 50 ppm) — different insecticide classes. Ant runs → permethrin dust or spinosad bait, not a herbicide.
Glyphosate — paths and drives
Weedol Pathclear RTU is glyphosate at about 0.46% (4.6 g/L) in a trigger bottle. Classic Resolva 24H RTU (not Xpress) is a stronger ~1% glyphosate diammonium spray — see that teardown for the 30 ml/L concentrate maths. Pathclear’s weaker band is 13 ml/L.
Spray dry leaves until wet; keep off plants you want to keep. Glyphosate is systemic — it is not a selective lawn weedkiller.
Pelargonic acid — contact, not systemic
Resolva Xpress 24H (and Xtra Fast) is pelargonic acid / nonanoic acid (CAS 112-05-0) at about 31 g/L in the RTU. It burns green tissue on contact and does not move into roots the way glyphosate does. Classic Resolva 24H without ‘Xpress’ is often still glyphosate — read the SDS.
170 ml of 186.7 g/L concentrate made up to 1 litre matches the trigger. It will scorch grass. See the Resolva Xpress teardown — not Pathclear, not Doff lawn concentrate.
Mecoprop-P and dicamba — weeds in the lawn
Doff Concentrated Lawn Weedkiller (and Weedol LN Conc) is 37.5 g/L mecoprop-P plus 4.675 g/L dicamba. Current Weedol Lawn (MAPP 17599) is a different three-way: about 53.4 g/L MCPA, 10.7 g/L fluroxypyr and 5.4 g/L clopyralid at 15 ml per 10 m². Both are auxin herbicides for established turf. Neither replaces Pathclear on a driveway.
Keep spray off flowers and ponds. Do not treat new lawns. Compost the first four mowings before using as mulch. See the Doff lawn-weedkiller teardown for the 1 L bottle maths.
Triclopyr — SBK and woody weeds
Vitax SBK is triclopyr (CAS 55335-06-3) for brambles, nettles and woody regrowth where approved. Dilution maths differ from glyphosate — use the SBK teardown, not the Pathclear one.
Drift onto turf can damage grass. Wind and pond margins matter: pesticides are not patio biocides.
Fungicides are not weedkillers
Rose Clear (myclobutanil), Provanto Fungus Fighter (tebuconazole), Fungus Clear Ultra (triticonazole), Bordeaux mixture (copper) and Vitax Yellow Sulphur (elemental sulphur) control fungal disease on crops — different approvals, different PPE. Sulphur is a contact dust or wettable wash, not a systemic triazole. Nippon ant powder is permethrin; Provanto Ultimate Bug Killer is deltamethrin; BugClear Ultra concentrate is acetamiprid; BugClear Fruit & Veg Ultra RTU is rapeseed oil at 17 g/L — a contact suffocant, not a neonic. Insecticides, not weedkillers. If the problem is green algae on paving, go to the patio BAC/DDAC guides instead.
Buy bulk legally
Professional packs may carry use restrictions. Buy listings a householder can legally apply, the same way we treat BAC 50. Store locked; triple-rinse sprayers between products.
FAQ
- Is Weedol the same as SBK?
- No. Weedol Pathclear is glyphosate — broad systemic herbicide for paths and bare ground. Vitax SBK is triclopyr for woody weeds such as brambles where the label allows. Different HSE numbers, different drift rules.
- Will glyphosate kill moss on my lawn?
- Yes — and it will kill the grass too. Lawn moss is a ferrous sulphate or iron-based feed job (see Mo Bacter or sulphate of ammonia teardowns), not a glyphosate RTU.
- What kills daisies without killing the grass?
- A selective lawn weedkiller: mecoprop-P plus dicamba (Doff / Weedol LN Conc) or the current Weedol Lawn three-way (MCPA, fluroxypyr, clopyralid). Pathclear glyphosate will brown the turf. SBK triclopyr is for brambles, not daisies in grass.
- Are slug pellets a weedkiller?
- No. Ferric phosphate slug bait (CAS 10045-86-0) is a pesticide molluscicide, not a herbicide. Do not scatter it hoping to kill dandelions.

Pathclear RTU is glyphosate at about 0.46 g/L in a trigger bottle. The same working strength comes from 13 ml of 360 g/L glyphosate concentrate per litre of water — pennies per litre versus £8.49 for the branded RTU.

Current Weedol Lawn (MAPP 17599) is a different three-way — MCPA, fluroxypyr and clopyralid — see that teardown. A 1 L bottle of the mecoprop-P/dicamba formulation is the same working spray without the 200 ml garden-centre tax.

Provanto Ultimate Bug Killer is deltamethrin at 15 g/L in a 30 ml garden-centre bottle. Half a millilitre per litre outdoors lands at about 7.5 mg/L — the same pyrethroid as a 1 L amenity pack of that 15 g/L emulsion. It is not permethrin ant dust, not SB soft soap, and it is very toxic to aquatic life and bees when spray is wet.

- Amateur-labelled spinosad ant bait 0.081% (same liquid)168316-95-8
Nippon Ant Killer Liquid is spinosad at 0.081% (CAS 168316-95-8) in a 25 g honey-sweet bait — Vitax SDS, not a spray. It is not Nippon Ant Killer Powder (permethrin dust) and not Provanto Ultimate Bug Killer (deltamethrin). Technical spinosad SC is a professional foliar insecticide: there is no sensible UK household bulk path that a householder can legally mix as ant bait. A 4 × 25 g pack of the same labelled liquid is the only honest stack.
