The marketing claim

The chemical reality
BugClear Ultra is acetamiprid at 5 g/L — a neonicotinoid systemic, not a pyrethroid dust and not soft soap. Ten millilitres per litre lands at 0.05 g/L, matching the ornamental label. A 1 L amateur pack of that 5 g/L SL is the same molecule without the 200 ml garden-centre pour.

The Marketing Claim & The Catch
A 200 millilitres pack of BugClear Ultra Concentrate typically retails around £10.49 in lawn & garden. That is a UK shelf-price snapshot for the maths on this page — not a live shop quote or a manufacturer RRP. Listings, sizes and deals move. The marketing line is that you are buying a finished lifestyle product, not a weighed chemical.
On the pack: Kills on contact and protects for up to three weeks; For flowers, fruit and vegetables; and 200 ml makes 20 litres of spray.
The catch: BugClear Ultra is acetamiprid at 5 g/L — a neonicotinoid systemic, not a pyrethroid dust and not soft soap. Ten millilitres per litre lands at 0.05 g/L, matching the ornamental label. A 1 L amateur pack of that 5 g/L SL is the same molecule without the 200 ml garden-centre pour.

Proprietary Blend & Dosage Breakdown
The labelled active is Acetamiprid at 0.5%. Everything else in the pack is water-soluble concentrate (sl).
At 0.5% active, most of what you pay for is carrier and packaging. The brand is selling convenience, fragrance and a label — not a uniquely potent molecule.
Branded working strength is whatever comes out of the bottle. The bulk alternative is 0.5% Acetamiprid 5 g/L soluble concentrate, mixed to 10 ml concentrate in 1 L water (ornamental BugClear band; lettuce 5 ml/L).

The Active Chemical Alternative (Dupe Stack)
The dupe stack is Acetamiprid 5 g/L soluble concentrate at 0.5% bulk. Indexed as CAS 135410-20-7, formula C10H11ClN4. Buy it as 1 litre for around £29.99 from Amazon UK.
Working strength: 10 ml concentrate in 1 L water (ornamental BugClear band; lettuce 5 ml/L). Indicative cost £0.30 per diluted litre — 85% below a typical branded pack on a per-litre basis, before you reuse leftover bulk.
Follow the mixing method and the supplier SDS. Wear the listed PPE. Do not mix incompatible oxidisers, acids or ammonia.
- Pesticide: read the MAPP label on the pack you buy. Gloves, goggles. Harmful to bees when spray is wet — treat at dusk, keep off ponds and water butts.
- Ornamentals and houseplants: 10 ml of 5 g/L acetamiprid SL per litre of water (0.05 g/L). Lettuce on the label is often 5 ml/L. Do not exceed the labelled number of applications or harvest interval.
- Spray both leaf faces until glistening. Use immediately; do not store mixed spray. Keep pets off until dry.
- 1 litre of 5 g/L concentrate at 10 ml/L makes about 100 litres of ornamental spray — five 200 ml garden-centre bottles.
- Buy amateur-labelled 5 g/L acetamiprid a householder can legally apply. Do not invent a stronger mix from agricultural SG (Gazelle-class). Triple-rinse the sprayer; never share it with herbicides without a thorough wash.

Active ingredient and cheaper alternative — FAQ
Is this the same as Provanto Ultimate Bug Killer?
No. Provanto Ultimate is deltamethrin (CAS 52918-63-5) — a contact pyrethroid. BugClear Ultra is acetamiprid (CAS 135410-20-7), a neonicotinoid that moves in the plant. Different HSE numbers, different bee and harvest rules. Do not tank-mix them.
Is this the same as Nippon ant powder?
No. Nippon powder is permethrin dust for ant runs. BugClear is a foliar / drench insecticide for plant pests. Never put acetamiprid concentrate in an ant puffer or on skin.
