The marketing claim
“Protection from limescale, dirt and odours”
The chemical reality
Calgon 3-in-1 powder is mostly zeolite 4A (CAS 1318-02-1) — a detergent ion-exchange builder, not citric acid and not soda crystals. The box lists more than 30% zeolites plus a pinch of polycarboxylate and perfume. A 5 kg sack of detergent-grade 4A is the same softening mineral. This is not pond clinoptilolite and not a kettle descaler.

The Marketing Claim & The Catch
A 500 grams pack of Calgon 3 in 1 Limescale Protection Powder typically retails around £3.50 in household cleaning. That is a UK shelf-price snapshot for the maths on this page — not a live shop quote or a manufacturer RRP. Listings, sizes and deals move. The marketing line is that you are buying a finished lifestyle product, not a weighed chemical.
On the pack: Protection from limescale, dirt and odours; Add to every wash with your detergent; and Dose by water hardness — 25 g, 50 g or 75 g.

Proprietary Blend & Dosage Breakdown
The labelled active is Zeolite 4A (sodium aluminosilicate) at 35%. Everything else in the pack is polycarboxylates, non-ionic surfactant and perfume.
At 35% active, most of what you pay for is carrier and packaging. The brand is selling convenience, fragrance and a label — not a uniquely potent molecule.
Branded working strength is whatever comes out of the bottle. The bulk alternative is 100% Detergent-grade zeolite 4A (sodium aluminosilicate), mixed to 50 g per wash (hard-water Calgon scoop).

The Active Chemical Alternative (Dupe Stack)
The dupe stack is Detergent-grade zeolite 4A (sodium aluminosilicate) at 100% bulk. Indexed as CAS 1318-02-1, formula Na12(AlO2)12(SiO2)12·27H2O. Buy it as 5 kg for around £16.99 from Amazon UK.
Working strength: 50 g per wash (hard-water Calgon scoop). Indicative cost £0.17 per diluted litre — 51% below a typical branded pack on a per-litre basis, before you reuse leftover bulk.
Follow the mixing method and the supplier SDS. Wear the listed PPE. Do not mix incompatible oxidisers, acids or ammonia.
- Dust irritant. Gloves if you have dry skin; avoid breathing the powder. Do not mix with acids or bleach in a jug.
- Dose 50 g of detergent-grade zeolite 4A into the main wash drawer with your usual detergent (25 g in medium-hard water, 75 g in very hard water — the Calgon scoop band).
- Buy synthetic zeolite 4A / sodium aluminosilicate listed as a detergent builder. Pond or aquarium zeolite is usually clinoptilolite (a different mineral) — it is not this teardown.
- 5 kg at 50 g/wash is a hundred hard-water doses — ten 500 g grocery boxes. Store dry; zeolite cakes if it picks up moisture.
- This is a water-softening builder, not a citric kettle descale and not soda crystals. It will not replace Service-it on an empty 90 °C cycle.

Active ingredient and cheaper alternative — FAQ
Is Calgon the same as Dr. Beckmann Service-it?
No. Service-it liquid is citric acid for an empty hot maintenance wash. Calgon 3-in-1 is zeolite ion-exchange powder you dose into every wash. Different molecule, different job — zeolite does not dissolve limescale the way citric does.
Is this the same as Dri-Pak soda crystals?
No. Soda crystals are sodium carbonate (a mild alkali and precipitating softener). Calgon’s main mineral is zeolite 4A, which swaps calcium for sodium without raising pH the same way. See the soda-crystals teardown for the hotter laundry alkali.
How do you mix the 3 in 1 Limescale Protection Powder dupe stack?
