Four laundry jobs, four molecules
The laundry aisle sells ‘limescale protection’, ‘machine care’, ‘colour rescue’ and ‘antibacterial freshness’ as if they were flavours of one powder. They are not. Read the SDS before you buy another grocery box.
Hard-water wash builder → zeolite 4A or a citrate sequesterant (the two Calgon SKUs). Dishwasher softener compartment → coarse sodium chloride. Heater / drum descale → citric acid on an empty hot cycle. A dye that ran → dithionite, not Oxi. Organic stains on washable cloth → percarbonate. Odour on a dry sofa → cyclodextrin, not a quat. A cationic laundry cleanser is a different bottle again.
Calgon is two SKUs — zeolite powder vs citrate tabs
Calgon 3-in-1 powder is mostly zeolite 4A (sodium aluminosilicate, CAS 1318-02-1) — a detergent ion-exchange builder. The box doses 25–75 g by water hardness. A 5 kg sack of detergent-grade 4A is the same mineral. It is not pond clinoptilolite, not soda crystals, and it does not dissolve limescale the way citric does.
Calgon 4-in-1 tablets declare 15–30% polycarboxylates (sodium polyacrylate family, CAS 9003-04-7). Older Express tabs also listed trisodium citrate (CAS 6132-04-3). The everyday hardness job is a teaspoon of food-grade citrate in the drawer — 10 g per wash — not a 75 g/L Service-it drum clean. Do not treat the powder and the tabs as one product.
Dishwasher salt is just coarse NaCl
Finish dishwasher salt is sodium chloride (CAS 7647-14-5) — coarse, high-purity granules for the machine’s ion-exchange resin. A 25 kg sack of PDV or labelled water-softener salt is the same regenerant. Pour it neat into the salt compartment; do not dissolve it first.
Do not use iodised table salt — anti-caking agents can clog the valve. Soft-water areas may not need it. This is not a detergent, not a rinse aid, and it does not belong in the Calgon drawer.
Citric descale vs soda crystals vs every-wash builder
Dr. Beckmann Service-it is about 7.5% citric acid (CAS 5949-29-1) for an empty hot maintenance wash. That is the heater descale. Bulk citric plus water beats the 250 ml grocery bottle; rinse the drum and run a short rinse if the manual says so.
Soda crystals (sodium carbonate decahydrate) are a milder laundry alkali — grease-cutting and a precipitating softener, not a zeolite builder and not a citric descale. Use them as the Dri-Pak teardown says. Never mix citric and a strong alkali in one jug.
Colour-run is a reducer; Oxi is an oxidiser
Dr. Beckmann Colour Run Remover is 15–30% sodium dithionite (CAS 7775-14-6) in a 75 g sachet. About 20 g of 85% textile hydrosulphite in 5 L matches the sachet’s active. It strips loose dye. It liberates sulphur dioxide if it meets acid — keep it away from vinegar, Service-it, Viakal and bleach.
Vanish Oxi Action is sodium percarbonate (CAS 15630-89-4) for tea, grass and soak bleaching. About 20 g/L is a pre-soak. It will not reverse a dye transfer, and mixing it with dithionite or hypochlorite is a wasted oxidiser fight. The carpet-and-stain guide covers the Oxi versus Vax split.
Quat cleanser and cyclodextrin are not softeners
Dettol laundry cleanser is about 2.4% mixed quats (BAC/DDAC family, CAS 68424-85-1). Dilute BAC 50 to that band and dose the fabric-softener drawer — it is a cationic biocide, not Calgon and not PCMX surface Dettol. Do not mix quats with anionic detergent or bleach in a jug.
Febreze-style fabric refresher is hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (CAS 128446-35-5) at about 1% — an odour host, not a disinfectant and not a hardness builder. Bicarbonate in a dish is a different odour job again. One chemistry per pass; rinse between if you change tack.
FAQ
- Is Calgon the same as dishwasher salt?
- No. Calgon 3-in-1 powder is zeolite 4A (CAS 1318-02-1) dosed into a wash. Calgon 4-in-1 tabs are a polycarboxylate / citrate sequesterant. Dishwasher salt is coarse sodium chloride (CAS 7647-14-5) for the machine’s ion-exchange resin. Different compartment, different job.
- Will Calgon descale the washing-machine heater?
- Not the way citric does. Service-it liquid is about 7.5% citric acid on an empty hot maintenance wash. Every-wash zeolite or citrate does not replace that quarterly heater descale. See the Service-it teardown.
- Is colour-run remover the same as Vanish Oxi?
- No. Vanish Oxi is sodium percarbonate (CAS 15630-89-4) — an oxidiser soak. Colour Run Remover is sodium dithionite (CAS 7775-14-6), a reducing bleach. Never mix either with acid or hypochlorite.
