The marketing claim

The chemical reality
Dri-Pak’s bag is sodium carbonate decahydrate (CAS 6132-02-1) — washing soda. The molecule is the product. A 5 kg sack of the same crystals is the cupboard staple without the 1 kg grocery markup. This is not Vanish (that is percarbonate) and not borax substitute (sesquicarbonate).

The Marketing Claim & The Catch
A 1 kg pack of Dri-Pak Soda Crystals typically retails around £2.49 in household cleaning. That is a UK shelf-price snapshot for the maths on this page — not a live shop quote or a manufacturer RRP. Listings, sizes and deals move. The marketing line is that you are buying a finished lifestyle product, not a weighed chemical.
On the pack: Cleans washing machines, sinks and drains; Laundry booster and water softener; and Cuts grease on hard surfaces.

Proprietary Blend & Dosage Breakdown
The labelled active is Sodium carbonate decahydrate at 100%. Everything else in the pack is none (washing-soda crystals).
Even when the pack is sold as “pure” or ready-to-use, the dose that actually does the work is Sodium carbonate decahydrate. The rest is how they get it into a bottle you will pick up.
Branded working strength is whatever comes out of the bottle. The bulk alternative is 100% Sodium carbonate decahydrate (soda crystals), mixed to 50 g per litre for general cleaning / laundry booster.

The Active Chemical Alternative (Dupe Stack)
The dupe stack is Sodium carbonate decahydrate (soda crystals) at 100% bulk. Indexed as CAS 6132-02-1, formula Na2CO3·10H2O. Buy it as 5 kg for around £7.99 from Amazon UK.
Working strength: 50 g per litre for general cleaning / laundry booster. Indicative cost £0.08 per diluted litre — 36% below a typical branded pack on a per-litre basis, before you reuse leftover bulk.
Follow the mixing method and the supplier SDS. Wear the listed PPE. Do not mix incompatible oxidisers, acids or ammonia.
- Gloves recommended — hot soda-crystal liquor is alkaline and can irritate skin. Do not mix with acids or bleach in one bucket.
- Dissolve 50 g of crystals per litre of hot water for sinks, floors and a laundry booster (about 30–50 g in a hot wash).
- For a washing-machine clean: 200 g in the drum on an empty hot cycle. For drains: a handful followed by hot water — this is not caustic drain gel.
- 5 kg is five Dri-Pak 1 kg bags. Store dry; the decahydrate cakes if it picks up moisture.
- Anhydrous soda ash is stronger per gram (about 18.5 g anhydrous ≈ 50 g crystals) — convert if that is the sack you buy.

Active ingredient and cheaper alternative — FAQ
Are soda crystals the same as Vanish Oxi Action?
No. Soda crystals are sodium carbonate (a mild alkali and water softener). Vanish-style oxy powders are sodium percarbonate — carbonate plus locked hydrogen peroxide. Use the Vanish teardown for the oxidiser; this one is the alkali.
Can I mix soda crystals with vinegar?
They cancel. The fizz is carbon dioxide as alkali meets acid — not extra cleaning power. Use one or the other, then rinse. Never mix in a sealed bottle.
How do you mix the Soda Crystals dupe stack?
Gloves recommended — hot soda-crystal liquor is alkaline and can irritate skin. Do not mix with acids or bleach in one bucket. Dissolve 50 g of crystals per litre of hot water for sinks, floors and a laundry booster (about 30–50 g in a hot wash). For a washing-machine clean: 200 g in the drum on an empty hot cycle. For drains: a handful followed by hot water — this is not caustic drain gel. 5 kg is five Dri-Pak 1 kg bags. Store dry; the decahydrate cakes if it picks up moisture. Anhydrous soda ash is stronger per gram (about 18.5 g anhydrous ≈ 50 g crystals) — convert if that is the sack you buy.
