The marketing claim
“Eliminates odours, does not just mask them”
The chemical reality
The odour trap in Febreze fabric spray is hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (CAS 128446-35-5) at about 1% — a sugar ring that hosts smelly molecules. The television advert is the perfume. A 1% cyclodextrin wipe is the same host chemistry without the Unstopables tax. It is not a disinfectant and it is not bicarbonate in a trigger.

The Marketing Claim & The Catch
A 500 millilitres pack of Febreze Fabric Refresher typically retails around £3.50 in household cleaning. That is a UK shelf-price snapshot for the maths on this page — not a live shop quote or a manufacturer RRP. Listings, sizes and deals move. The marketing line is that you are buying a finished lifestyle product, not a weighed chemical.
On the pack: Eliminates odours, does not just mask them; Safe on fabrics when used as directed; and Unstopables freshness that lasts.

Proprietary Blend & Dosage Breakdown
The labelled active is Hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin at 1%. Everything else in the pack is water, ethanol and a large perfume dose.
At 1% active, most of what you pay for is carrier and packaging. The brand is selling convenience, fragrance and a label — not a uniquely potent molecule.
Branded working strength is whatever comes out of the bottle. The bulk alternative is 99% Hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HP-β-CD), mixed to 10 g/L (about 1% w/v — fabric-refresher band).

The Active Chemical Alternative (Dupe Stack)
The dupe stack is Hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HP-β-CD) at 99% bulk. Indexed as CAS 128446-35-5, formula C42H70O35 (β-CD core; HP substitution varies). Buy it as 1 kg for around £24.99 from Amazon UK.
Working strength: 10 g/L (about 1% w/v — fabric-refresher band). Indicative cost £0.25 per diluted litre — 90% below a typical branded pack on a per-litre basis, before you reuse leftover bulk.
Follow the mixing method and the supplier SDS. Wear the listed PPE. Do not mix incompatible oxidisers, acids or ammonia.
- Gloves if you have sensitive skin. Label the bottle. This is an odour host, not a disinfectant and not a stain oxidiser.
- Dissolve 10 g of hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin in 1 litre of warm water (about 1% — the fabric-spray band). Optional: a splash of 99% IPA (50 ml) to help it wet fabric, and a drop of fragrance if you want a scent. The cyclodextrin is the trap; the perfume is optional theatre.
- Mist fabrics lightly and allow to dry. Test a hidden seam on silk, leather and dry-clean-only cloth. Do not soak upholstery.
- 1 kg at 10 g/L makes about 100 litres of 1% spray — two hundred 500 ml Febreze bottles. Food-grade β-cyclodextrin (CAS 7585-39-9) also hosts odours; the hydroxypropyl grade dissolves more readily.
- Do not mix with bleach, quat biocides or acids in one bottle. Store dry powder sealed — cyclodextrin cakes if it picks up moisture.

Active ingredient and cheaper alternative — FAQ
Is Febreze the same as Zoflora?
No. Zoflora is a benzalkonium quat disinfectant plus perfume. Febreze fabric spray is a cyclodextrin odour host plus perfume. Different SDS, different job. DIY cyclodextrin will not kill bacteria, and BAC 50 will not cage pet smells the way a cyclodextrin ring does.
Is this the same as bicarbonate of soda?
Same cupboard job family (odours) but different chemistry. Bicarbonate (CAS 144-55-8) is a mild alkali that absorbs acid smells in a dish or a sprinkle. Febreze is a dissolved cyclodextrin spray for fabrics. See the Dri-Pak bicarbonate teardown for fridges and bins.
